Ukko (English spelling)

Japanese: ウッコ（英語表記）Ukko

Finnic thunder god. His name means "old man." He is believed to be in charge of thunder as well as all atmospheric phenomena such as clouds and rain, and was worshiped on mountaintops with offerings of lamb and beer. The offerings were placed in a box made of birch bark called "Ukko's box" and left on the mountaintop until the next day, and it was believed that Ukko would eat some of the offerings during the night, and the rest was eaten by the festival participants the following morning. During this time, the women also became intoxicated with the wine, and many lewd acts were performed. It was believed that Ukko would thereby bring rain to the earth and ensure a good harvest.

フィン族の雷神。名は「老人」を意味する。雷とともに雲や雨など大気現象全般を司ると考えられ，羊の肉とビールを供物として山の頂で祭祀された。供物は「ウッコの箱」と呼ばれるかばの木の樹皮でつくられた箱に入れられて翌日まで山頂に放置され，夜の間にウッコがその一部を食べると信じられ，残りは祭りの参加者が翌朝食べた。そのおり，女たちも酒に酔いしれ，多くのみだらな行為がなされたという。これによってウッコは地に雨を降らし，作物の実りを保証すると信じられた。
