... Sometimes the distortion of the sound can be made more noticeable for special effects. The perfection of the horn and the stop technique was achieved in the mid-18th century, and the Dresden court musician Anton Joseph Hampel (c. 1710-1771), originally from Bohemia, is considered to have been a major contributor. After that, many attempts were made to improve the mechanism, and in the mid-19th century instruments with valves became popular, but it was not until the end of the century that they became the norm.
