The name of a Celtic tribe that lived between the Saône and Loire rivers. They were also called the Haedui. Their main town was Bibracte, later Augustodunum (now Autun). They were considered friends of Rome in 121 BC, and were generally Caesar's greatest supporters during the Gallic Wars. During the imperial period they were given the title of ally, and in 48 they were allowed to elect members to the Roman senate. They participated in the Sacrovir revolt in 21 and the Windex revolt in 68, but peace continued after that. [Kouji Takako] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
