Emi Suiin

Novelist. Real name Tadakatsu. Born in Okayama City. Moved to Tokyo and studied at Sugiura Shigetake's Shokojuku, where he met Iwaya Sazanami and Omachi Keigetsu. In 1888 (Meiji 21), he became a member of the Kenyusha Society. In 1892, he founded the Kosui-sha Society, which launched the magazine Kozakura Odoshi, and introduced Tayama Katai and Ota Gyokumei to the world. After that, he continued to write novels while working as a journalist, relying on the Chuo Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, Taiheiyo, and Niroku Shimpo. His representative works include "Nyobogoroshi" (1895) and "Itako no kyoku" (1897), which are included in the "Suigaku Sōsho" (1910, Hakubunkan), as well as the invaluable literary document "Jikochushin Meiji Bungakudanshi" (History of the Self-Centered Meiji Literary World) (1926-27).

小説家。本名忠功(ただかつ)。岡山市に生まれる。上京して杉浦重剛(しげたけ)の称好塾に学び、巌谷小波(いわやさざなみ)、大町桂月(けいげつ)を知る。1888年(明治21)硯友社(けんゆうしゃ)同人。92年江水社をおこし『小桜縅(こざくらおどし)』を創刊、田山花袋(かたい)、太田玉茗(ぎょくめい)を世に送った。その後、『中央新聞』『読売新聞』『太平洋』『二六(にろく)新報』などに拠(よ)り、ジャーナリスティックな活動をするかたわら創作も続けた。代表作には『女房殺し』(1895)、『新潮来曲(いたこのきょく)』(1897)等を所収する『水蔭叢書(そうしょ)』(1910・博文館)のほか、貴重な文壇資料『自己中心明治文壇史』(1926~27)がある。
