Concrete poetry. Language has grammatical and rhetorical elements such as meaning, proposition, context, and metaphor, as well as the aural element of sound and the visual element of letters. After Symbolism, modern poetry attempted to recover the evocative power and material energy of the audiovisual elements of language, giving rise to experiments such as the sound poetry of Scheerbarth and Morgenstern, the free speech of the Futurists, the abstract poetry of Dada, object poetry, and simultaneous poetry. These were mediated by the "concrete art" of Kandinsky and Max Bill (1908-94) and the "lettrisme" of Isidore Isou (1925- ), and became the concrete poetry movement after World War II, which made language independent of grammar and meaning and liberated it as a naked material to time, space, and the world structure.
