Hideo Hatoyama

Civil law scholar, lawyer, and politician. Second son of Kazuo Hatoyama. Graduated from the law department of Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). Became an assistant professor there in 1910. In 1911, he went to Europe to study, learning in Bonn, Berlin, and Paris. Returned to Japan in 1914 (Taisho 3). Became a professor in 1916, and taught civil law courses. In 1926, he resigned from his professorship to open a law practice, and in 1932 (Showa 7), he became a member of the House of Representatives. His academic style was strongly influenced by German jurisprudence, and he contributed to its import. His major works include "An Introduction to Japanese Civil Law" and "An Introduction to Japanese Obligation Law."

民法学者、弁護士、政治家。鳩山和夫の次男。1908年（明治41）東京帝国大学法科卒業。1910年同助教授となる。1911年ヨーロッパに留学し、ボン、ベルリン、パリで学ぶ。1914年（大正3）帰国。1916年教授となり、民法講座を担当。1926年教授を辞して弁護士を開業、1932年（昭和7）には衆議院議員となる。学風はドイツ法学の影響を強く受け、その輸入に貢献があった。主著に『日本民法総論』『日本債権法総論』など。
