Civil law scholar, lawyer, and politician. Second son of Kazuo Hatoyama. Graduated from the law department of Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). Became an assistant professor there in 1910. In 1911, he went to Europe to study, learning in Bonn, Berlin, and Paris. Returned to Japan in 1914 (Taisho 3). Became a professor in 1916, and taught civil law courses. In 1926, he resigned from his professorship to open a law practice, and in 1932 (Showa 7), he became a member of the House of Representatives. His academic style was strongly influenced by German jurisprudence, and he contributed to its import. His major works include "An Introduction to Japanese Civil Law" and "An Introduction to Japanese Obligation Law."
