Vinosgai (Beautiful Shellfish) - Vinosgai (English spelling) quohog

Japanese: ビノスガイ(美主貝) - ビノスガイ（英語表記）quohog

A bivalve mollusk of the Veneridae family. This species was previously classified as a species of the Venus genus, hence the name Venus shell. It is grayish-white in color, which does not imply a beautiful Venus. The shell is large and thick, oval-triangular in shape, 10 cm long, 8 cm high, and 5 cm bulged. The surface is grayish-white with dense thin growth ribs all over, and many thin radial lines between them. The inside is white. The inner edge of the shell is finely notched. It is found in the Tohoku region, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and Primorsky Krai, and lives on fine sandy bottoms from the intertidal zone to a depth of 20 m.

マルスダレガイ科の二枚貝。この種は以前はVenus属の1種とされたのでVenus貝と名づけられた。全体は灰白色で，美しいビーナスという意ではない。殻は大型で厚く，長さ10cm，高さ8cm，膨らみ5cmに達する卵三角形。表面は灰白色で全面に細い成長肋が密にあり，またその間に細い多くの放射状のすじがある。内面は白色。殻の内側の縁は細かく刻まれる。東北地方～北海道，千島，サハリン，沿海州に分布し，潮間帯下より水深20mの細砂底にすむ。
