Originally, it was a water spout in the shape of an animal in Gothic architecture to drain rainwater. In Japan, it is called a hibashi, and is used in fountains and other water areas in parks. It is often modeled after the head of an animal, monster, or person, and is characterized by an open mouth spitting out water.
