Kowata Fox

Japanese: 木幡狐 - こわたぎつね
Kowata Fox
A fairy tale from the Muromachi period. The author and year of its creation are unknown. A fox princess marries a third-rank junior captain and gives birth to a young prince, but when she is forced to keep a dog, she returns to her old home and becomes a nun. A tale of a strange marriage and a tale of exile. The fact that the strange creature is a fox should be seen as a precursor to the later Shinodazuma legend. There are many stories of strange marriages in the fairy tales, including "The Fox's Tale," "The Crane's Tale" (female crane), "The Mouse's Tale" (male mouse), "The Wild Geese's Tale" (male wild geese), and "The Princess with the Curved Eyes" (male chrysanthemum).
