Thomas Rowlandson

English draughtsman, watercolorist, and caricaturist. Born into a wealthy merchant family in London. Entered the Royal Academy in 1772, where he mainly studied drawing and aspired to become a portrait and history painter, but from the 1780s he began working on humorous genre paintings and caricatures. His work skillfully uses contrasts between beauty and ugliness, wealth and poverty, life and death, and often contains erotic elements. In the late 1990s he partnered with publisher R. Ackerman to produce a large number of watercolor illustrations and prints. In addition to following in the traditions of Hogarth, he was influenced by French Rococo art and has a delicate sense of color and elegant lines.

イギリスの素描家，水彩画家，風刺版画家。ロンドンの富裕な商家に生まれる。1772年ローヤル･アカデミーに入学，おもにデッサンを学び肖像･歴史画家を志すが，80年代よりユーモアに満ちた風俗画･風刺画に取り組む。美醜，貧富，生死などのコントラストを巧みに用い，エロティックな要素も多い。90年代後半より出版業者R.アッカーマンと提携し多量の水彩挿絵･版画を制作。ホガースの伝統に加え，フランス･ロココ美術の感化を受けた流麗な描線，繊細な色彩感覚をもつ。
