Oedipus at Colonus

This masterpiece was written in the final years of Sophocles, one of the three great Greek tragic poets. Oedipus, who committed the sin and defilement foretold by fate, killing his father and marrying his mother, punishes himself with his own hands and becomes blind. He then wanders from country to country with his daughter Antigone, and finally reaches the sanctuary of the Eumenides in Athens. Sophocles' work begins with this scene, depicting the aged Oedipus enduring the hardships that continue to befall him, realizing that his fate has come, and, guided by the voice of the gods, suddenly disappearing from the earth.

ギリシア三大悲劇詩人の一人ソフォクレスの最晩年の名作。父を殺し母と結婚するという，運命の予告どおりの罪と汚れを犯したオイディプスは，われとわが手で己を罰し盲目となったのち，娘アンティゴネとともに諸国を漂浪し，ついにアテナイのエウメニデスの聖域にたどりつく。ソフォクレスの作品はその所から幕が上がり，老いさらばえたオイディプスがなおも身に襲いかかる苦難に耐えながら，運命の時が来たことを悟り，神の声に導かれながら地上から忽然と姿を消す最期のさまを描き出す。
