A port city in south-central Chile. It is located about 20 km south of Concepcion, overlooking the Arauco Bay in the Pacific Ocean. It was founded in 1851. It is located in the country's largest coalfield, and developed as a mining center and shipping port. It is also a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural areas, distributing grain, cotton, wine, and timber, and has factories for foundry, flour milling, and lumber. It is connected to Concepcion by rail and road. The naval battle offshore on November 1, 1914, during World War I, in which the German fleet led by M. Spee defeated the British fleet commanded by Ch. Cradock, is famous as the Battle of Coronel. Population 74,090 (1992 estimate).
