Around 1340 - 1418
Born into a citizen's family in Niem (or Nieheim) in Westphalia in western Germany, he became a minor clergyman in Paderborn, but in 1376 he went to Rome to study law, after which he served as a clerk in the papacy in Rome and Avignon. He was appointed Bishop of Verden in 1395, but retired four years later to return to the papacy, where he played a prominent role in ending the Great Schism after the accession of Gregory XII to the pontificate. His writings, which support the theory of the primacy of the Council, are extremely valuable historical sources for understanding the situation of the time.

ドイツ西部，ウェストファーレンのニームNiem(またはニーハイムNieheim)で市民の家に生まれ，パーダーボルンで下級聖職者となったが，1376年ローマに出て法学を学んだ後，ローマとアビニョンの教皇庁に仕え書記官となる。95年フェルデンVerden司教に任命されるが，4年後退任して教皇庁に帰り，グレゴリウス12世の教皇就任以後，教会大分裂(シスマ)を終結させるために顕著な役割を演じた。公会議首位説に立つ彼の著作は当時の時代状況を知るうえで非常に貴重な史料である。
