Around 1340 - 1418 Born into a citizen's family in Niem (or Nieheim) in Westphalia in western Germany, he became a minor clergyman in Paderborn, but in 1376 he went to Rome to study law, after which he served as a clerk in the papacy in Rome and Avignon. He was appointed Bishop of Verden in 1395, but retired four years later to return to the papacy, where he played a prominent role in ending the Great Schism after the accession of Gregory XII to the pontificate. His writings, which support the theory of the primacy of the Council, are extremely valuable historical sources for understanding the situation of the time.
