[Died] June 1, 1942, Prague Czech writer and doctor. A writer who pursued the methods of modern art, and a believer in communism. Many of his works denounced the capitalist world, finding the evil of capitalism at the bottom of poverty, war, and absurdity. He continued to resist the Nazis, and was arrested and executed during illegal activities. His representative works include the novel Pekař Jan Marhoul (1924), the prose poem Markéta Lazarová (31), and From the History of the Czech People (48, unfinished).
