A species of the genus Salvelinus (illustration) of the family Salmonidae (Salmoniformes). A typical freshwater fish that lives in the uppermost reaches of the river, it is more common in deeper rivers than the yamame (illustration), and is popular among anglers as a good target for mountain stream fishing. It is called Kirikuchi in Wakayama, Gogi in the Chugoku Mountains, and Imouo in Fukui, and these are thought to be different lineages of the same species that are distributed independently. It grows to about 30 cm in length, with oval parr marks on its sides, small light gray circular spots, and even smaller vermilion spots mixed in below the lateral line.

サケ目サケ科イワナ属の1種（イラスト）。最上流水域に生息する代表的な淡水魚で，ヤマメ（イラスト）よりもさらに奥深い谷川に多く，渓流釣りの好対象として釣人たちから注目されている。和歌山ではキリクチ，中国山地ではゴギ，福井ではイモウオと呼ばれ，これらはそれぞれ独立した分布をする同一種内の別系群と考えられる。体長は30cmほどになり，体側に小判形のパー･マークparr markという斑紋をもち，また，小さな淡灰色の円点があり，側線より下にはさらに小さな朱点が混在する。
