A bird of the order Charadriiformes and family Laridae. A large seagull that breeds on beaches, cliffs, and islands in coastal areas of Europe and North Africa through Siberia, and in northern North America. Outside of the breeding season, it lives on coasts and river mouths, and migrates to Japan as a winter bird. It can be found throughout the country, but many winter in areas west of the Kanto region. Total length is about 60 cm. Its body is white, but its back and upper surfaces of the wings are blue-gray, with black areas near the wing tips and white spots within them. チドリ目カモメ科の鳥。大型のカモメで,ヨーロッパおよび北アフリカからシベリアにかけてと,北アメリカ北部の沿岸地方の海岸,岩壁,島などで繁殖する。繁殖期以外は海岸や河口にすみ,日本には冬鳥として渡来する。全国的に見られるが,関東地方以西で越冬するものが多い。全長約60cm。体は白色だが,背と翼上面は青灰色で,翼端近くに黒色部とその中に白点がある。魚や海岸動物の死体などを食べる。カモメ【柳沢 紀夫】
