This refers to the noise, hum, and power loss caused by corona discharges on power transmission lines. When the voltage of a power transmission line becomes high and there are sharp points on the conductor surface or on the metal fittings of insulators, the electric field becomes stronger and corona discharges occur. Corona discharges are particularly likely to occur in rainy weather, when drops of water form and fall, creating many sharp points. The same is true when the surface of insulators is soiled by salty winds near the coast. Discharges are generally accompanied by sound, resulting in audible noise.
