Located in the southwest of the former Settsu Province, in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture, this is the area of Muko-go, Muko-gun, in the Wamyōshō. It refers to the area across from Naniwa, along Osaka Bay with Amagasaki and Nishinomiya cities in the Muko River basin. The Muko Water Gate, which appears in the section on Empress Jingū in the Nihon Shoki, is the port of this area, and the Man'yōshū contains a poem that reads, "As the sky stretches across Muko, I think of my home." In the Seisetsu Taikan (1871), it is said that Muko Sea refers to the area from Amagasaki in the east to Owada (Kobe City) in the west. Before the Meiji period, the area was a producer of high-quality rice, and the area, centered around Nishinomiya, was known as one of Japan's leading sake-brewing regions.
