Hephaisteion (English spelling)

… He was originally the god of fire in the volcanic regions of Asia Minor, and is thought to have entered the Greek mainland via the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea, where he became the patron deity of all craftsmen who used fire. The centres of his worship were the volcanic islands of Lemnos and the Lipari Islands north of Sicily, and Athens, which had a large industrial population. On the west side of the Athenian agora, the Doric temple Hephaisteion (formerly called Theseion, incorrectly), built in the mid-5th century BC, remains almost completely intact. In artworks, he is often depicted as a bearded, middle-aged man wearing a small round hat and holding a hammer or other tool. …
