The capital of the Haut-Rhin department in the southern part of Alsace, in the eastern part of France. Located on the main railway line that connects Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Basel, it is the center of wine and fruit trade, textile industry and tourism in the surrounding area. Beer brewing developed. It was granted city rights in the late 13th century and became an important member of the league of cities that supported the Habsburgs, which was formed in the 14th century. There are many medieval historical sites, including a cathedral built in the 13th and 15th centuries and old wooden houses. During the Thirty Years' War, it was part of Sweden (1632-34), and after the Franco-Prussian War, it became part of Prussia (1871-1919), and during World War II, it was occupied by Germany. The Unterlinden Museum is a former convent (13th-14th century) and houses paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, including the Isenheim Altarpiece by M. Grünewald. Population 64,889 (1990).
