1902‐79 An Indian Gandhian. He traveled to the United States in 1922 and became interested in Marxism. After returning to India in 1929, he played an active role as a leader of the nationalist movement as a member of the left wing of the Indian National Congress. In 1934, he founded the Indian National Congress Socialist Party. He was arrested in 1940, but escaped in 1942 and led underground activities, including armed struggle, until he was rearrested the following year. After India's independence, he refused to join the new government and founded the People's Socialist Party in 1952. During this time, he gradually moved away from Marxism ideologically and became closer to Gandhism. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
