The capital of the ancient Indian kingdom of Magadha. In the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures, it is written as Rajagriha. There is an old castle located in a fortified area surrounded by hills, and a new castle located on the plains to the north of the hills. During the time of Buddha (6th century BCE to early 5th century BCE), it flourished as the residence of Kings Bimbisara and Ajatashatru, but lost its political importance when the capital was moved to Pataliputra on the banks of the Ganges in the north during the reign of Ajatashatru's son Udayin. There are many sacred sites related to Buddha, such as the Bamboo Grove Monastery and Vulture Peak, as well as Jina, the founder of Jainism, in the vicinity. The ruins of both the old and new capitals can be found in Rajgir, Bihar today. [Genichi Yamazaki] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
