Cow Town

…In 1875, a Northwestern Mounted Police garrison was established here, and in 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway passed through the city, providing the basis for development. Immigrants from the east continued to come here to work in agriculture and livestock, and the city was nicknamed "cow town." However, natural gas was discovered in 1914, and oil in 1937 in Turner Valley, about 40 km southwest of the city, and the city quickly became a mining and manufacturing city.
