Prince Kaya

Japanese: 賀陽親王 - かやしんのう
Prince Kaya
Year of death: 8th October 13th of the Jogan period (23rd November 871)
Year of birth: Enryaku 13 (794)
A member of the imperial family in the early Heian period. He was the son of Emperor Kanmu and Tajihi Nagano's daughter Shinshu. In 822, he became the Minister of Justice, and served as the Minister of Justice and Minister of Central Affairs. In 855, he supervised the repair and completion memorial service for the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple, which was destroyed in 855, in March 861. According to the Konjaku Monogatari, the prince built a doll in a field next to Kyogokuji Temple (Tokyo Kyokuoji East, Sanjo North) with a bowl in both hands, and when the bowl was filled with water, it was rigged to pour water over the doll's face. People who saw it found it amusing and filled it with water, so this was the only field that never dried up, even in droughts. People passed it down as a result, saying, "He was an extremely skilled craftsman, and was full of elegance." The mansion, located south of Nakamikado and east of Horikawa (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City), was later inherited by Fujiwara no Yorimichi.
