A group of islands in the central South Pacific Ocean, located between 168° and 175° west longitude and 13° and 15° south latitude. Formerly a kingdom, the Dutchman Roggeveen arrived in 1722. In 1899, it was divided along the 171° west longitude into American Samoa in the east and German Samoa (which gained independence in 1962 and was renamed Western Samoa in 1997).
