Biography

Born in Germany to a Tutsi father and Hutu mother. Raised in a wealthy family, he was exposed to music from the radio and records from an early age. At the age of six, he moved to Rwanda, his parents' homeland. In 1994, at the age of 17, his parents and siblings were killed in front of his eyes during the Rwandan genocide, which was caused by ethnic conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi. He narrowly escaped and relied on his parents' friends to travel to Germany again. He taught himself how to compose music, and made his debut as a singer-songwriter in 2002. His specialty is sophisticated, modern R&B with strong messages, and his two albums released in French were big hits in French-speaking Canada and France. In 2007, he made his Japanese debut with the album "The Birth of Cornelius" (lyrics in English). He is currently a Canadian citizen.

父親がツチ族、母親フツ族で、ドイツで生まれる。裕福な家庭育ち、幼い頃からラジオやレコードで音楽に親しむ。6歳で両親の故郷ルワンダに移る。1994年17歳の時、フツ族とツチ族の民族対立によるルワンダ大虐殺で父母と兄弟が目の前で殺された。自身は危うくまぬがれ、両親の友人を頼って再びドイツに渡った。独学で作曲を学び、2002年シンガー・ソングライターとしてデビュー。メッセージ性の強い、洗練された現代的なR&Bが持ち味で、フランス語で発表した2枚のアルバムはカナダのフランス語圏やフランスで大ヒット。2007年アルバム「ザ・バース・オブ・コーネリアス」(歌詞は英語)で日本デビュー。現在はカナダ国籍を持つ。
