Goldstein, Kurt

Goldstein, Kurt
Born: November 6, 1878 in Katowice, Silesia
[Died] September 19, 1965. New York German and American neurologist and psychiatrist. He served as professor at the universities of Königsberg, Frankfurt, and Berlin, but was pursued by the Nazi regime and moved to the United States (1935). He served as professor at Columbia University and Tufts University before opening his own practice. He moved from neurology and psychopathology to psychology, and his work is based on a biological, organism-wide view that is relatively close to Gestalt theory. His empirical research includes the relationship between brain damage and defects in perception and motor function, as well as the problem of aphasia. His major works include Der Aufbau des Organismus (1934) and Human Nature in the Light of Psychopathology (46).

Goldstein, Eugen

Born: September 5, 1850 in Gleiwitz
Died December 25, 1930. Berlin German physicist. Studied at both the Universities of Karlsruhe and Berlin, where he studied under H. Helmholtz. Professor of physics at the Potsdam Observatory. Studied the phenomenon of discharge in vacuum tubes. When an object was inserted into a discharge tube, a sharp shadow was cast on the anode, proving that radiation was coming from the cathode. In 1880, he performed an experiment in which he used a magnetic field to bend cathode rays, providing evidence for the idea that cathode rays are a flow of negatively charged particles, but he himself was skeptical of this theory because these particles do not show the Doppler effect. Furthermore, in 1886, he discovered the existence of radiation emanating from the anode, which he named canal rays.
