…Despite this family background, he distinguished himself through hard work and his natural talent for poetry and prose. During the Yongming period of the Southern Qi Dynasty (483-493), he gathered at the salon of Jingling King Xiao Ziliang and became a standard-bearer of the style of poetry known as the Yongming style. When Xiao Yan (Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty), whom he met there, founded the Liang Dynasty, he became a minister in the Secretariat and played an important role in the government, as well as in the literary and intellectual circles. In addition to the 100 volumes of the Song Shu, many of his poems have been included in the Wen Xuan and other works, and his ideological treatises on Buddhism have been included in the Guang Hongming Collection and other works. …
