How Green Was My Valley

American film. Directed by John Ford. Produced in 1941. One of Ford's most nostalgic and lyrical works. In this family story, the middle-aged protagonist reminisces about his childhood, when he and his family lived happily in a mining town in a valley. Images that underlie the mythical Garden of Eden coexist with humanism that questions the value of humanity. At the time, with the development of talkies, the use of talkative narration and flashback editing (an editing technique that blocks out the present to show the future or past) became popular as a way to convey the characters' feelings. However, this film combines lighting effects, composition, long shots that do not intentionally show close-ups of facial expressions, and silent pauses that allow the viewer to stare intently, to depict sentimental scenes with a rich sense of scenery. Due to the effects of World War II, it was not possible to film on location in the UK, so a mining town in Wales at the turn of the century was recreated on 20th Century Fox's vast property outside Hollywood. This set was also used in "The Moon Also Sets" (1943), remodeled into a Norwegian village occupied by the Nazis. An iconic backlot set (an outdoor set built for filming) from the era of Hollywood's big studios. The film won five Academy Awards in 1941, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Set Design. Released in Japan in 1950 (Showa 25).

アメリカ映画。監督ジョン・フォード。1941年作品。フォード作品のなかでもっとも郷愁を誘う、叙情性豊かに描かれた作品の一つ。初老の主人公が、谷にある故郷の炭鉱町で一家幸せに暮らしていた少年時代を回顧する家族の物語のなかに、神話であるエデンの園に通底するイメージと、人間の価値を問いかけるようなヒューマニズムとが共生する。当時トーキーの発達で、登場人物の心情を伝える手段として、饒舌(じょうぜつ)なナレーションの使用や瞬間的に挿入されるフラッシュバック編集（未来や過去を示すため、現在を遮断して区別させる編集技術）が流行していたが、本作は照明効果や構図、顔の表情をあえてクローズアップしないロングショットと、観る者に熟視させる沈黙の間などの映像様式とを組み合わせることにより、感傷的なシーンを情景豊かに描写している。第二次世界大戦の影響でイギリスでの現地ロケーション撮影ができず、ハリウッド郊外の20世紀フォックスの広大な所有地に、世紀転換期のイギリス・ウェールズ地方の炭鉱町を再現した。このセットは『月は沈みぬ』（1943）でも、ナチスに占領されたノルウェーの村に改装して使われている。ハリウッド大スタジオ時代の象徴的なバックロットセット（撮影用に建てられた野外セット）。監督賞をはじめ、1941年のアカデミー作品賞、撮影賞、室内装置賞など5部門を受賞した。1950年（昭和25）日本公開。
