Chora - Chora

Japanese:
Chora - Chora

A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. His real name was Miura Motokatsu, he was commonly known as Kanbei, and his other pseudonyms included Muian. He was born in Toba, Shima Province (Mie Prefecture). He studied haiku under Hyakuyu in Nagashima, Kishu (present-day Kihoku Town, Mie Prefecture), and at the age of 34, he founded Muian in Iseyamada and compiled the haiku anthology "Wagaio." After that, he traveled around Kii, Edo, Hokuetsu, Kyoto, and other places, and had frequent contact with Buson, Seira, Kyotai, and Ranko, and showed brilliant activity. He was a man who transcended utilitarianism, regardless of worldly affairs, and it seems that his calm and free-spirited personality sometimes drew public animosity. His style of writing reflects his personality, being simple but rich in rhyme, and he also had a mastery of the pathos of waka poetry. His edited works include "White-headed Crow," "Moonlit Night," and "Choyo Hokkushu." He died in Ise, and his grave is at Jugan-in Temple in Yamada.
