Spring Festival - Haru no Saiten

Spring Festival - Haru no Saiten
A ballet music composed by Stravinsky. One of the works that determined the direction of 20th century music. It consists of 14 pieces in two parts, "Praise of the Earth" and "Sacrifice". The libretto was written by the composer himself and Nikolai Roerich (who also designed the art), and depicts an ancient Russian pagan ritual. It premiered in Paris in 1913 with choreography by Nijinsky and conducting Monteux by the Ballets Russes, and caused a historical sensation with its bold dissonance and rhythm. Various attempts have been made to re-choreograph it since then, and works have been left behind by Massine (1920), Béjart (1959), MacMillan (1962), Neumeier (1972), Bausch (1975), and Graham (1984). Nijinsky's choreography had long been forgotten, but in 1987 the Joffrey Ballet in the United States restored it, including recreating Roerich's stage design, based on the research findings of ballet historian M. Hodson and art historian K. Archer.
