Kamo no Tadayuki

Japanese: 賀茂忠行 - かものただゆき

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A mid-Heian period Onmyo expert. Son of Gojin. His children were Kamo no Yasunori and Keiji no Yasutane. He served as Omi no Jō and Tanba Gon no Suke. During the Taira no Masakado Rebellion and Fujiwara no Sumitomo Rebellion, he petitioned for the training of the White Robe Kannon method. He was so well versed in Onmyo that it was said that no one could match him at the time. There is a story in the Chono Gunzai that Emperor Murakami tried to read the contents of a box, and it correctly identified that it was a rosary tied with a red string by Tadayuki. The Konjaku Monogatarishu also contains stories that demonstrate its effectiveness. For example, there is a story about a demon attacking a man while he was sleeping in his car, so the man used magic to avoid the demon's disaster, and a story about a thief breaking into a priest's house and trying to kill him, and the priest's divination, which predicted that the thief would actually appear when the priest recommended that the man abstain from certain things. Abe no Seimei was a disciple of Tadayuki from a young age, and was taught the art of astronomy. Thanks to his son Yasunori abdicating his rank, Tadayuki was promoted from Junior Sixth Rank to Junior Fifth Rank in the third year of Tentoku (959).

平安中期の陰陽家。江人の子。子には,賀茂保憲,慶慈保胤がいる。近江掾,丹波権介を歴任。平将門の乱,藤原純友の乱では白衣観音法を修すべきことを奏上する。当時,肩を並べる者がいないという世評があるほど,陰陽道に精通していた。村上天皇が試しに箱の中身を占わせて,忠行が赤い紐でつないだ念珠であることをいい当てたという話が『朝野群載』にある。『今昔物語集』にも,効験を示す説話が載っている。例えば車に乗って寝ているときに鬼神が襲ってきたので,術法を使って鬼難を避けた話とか,ある法師の家に盗人が入り命をねらうことを占い,物忌みを勧めたところ,本当に盗人が出現した話などが載っている。安倍晴明は,幼きころより忠行に随従した弟子であり,天文道を伝えられる。子の保憲が自らの位階を譲ったおかげで,忠行は天徳3(959)年に従六位の位階であったのが従五位下に上る。
