...If you knock it down, it becomes yours. Depending on the region, it is called "nengara," "kainen," "kuiuchi," "kobayo," "tappe," "tenga," "tengara," "nikki," "nekkui," or "bouchi." A stick made by cutting the fork of a tree branch short and leaving it like a hook is also used, and Kunio Yanagita suggests that this is related to the faith in tree branches, and that the "nen" in "nengara" may be "nen" (thought).
