Otsuki Joden
1845-1931 A scholar from the Meiji to early Showa period.
Born on August 17, 1840. Second son of Otsuki Iwakei. Older brother of Otsuki Fumihiko. Studied at Yoken-do, a domain school in the Sendai domain. Became an instructor at the Naval Academy in 1871, and worked at the Ministry of Education before retiring in 1872. After that, he was active as an independent scholar in a wide range of fields including Japanese, Chinese and Western studies, literature, and song, dance and music. Died on January 12, 1931. Age 87. Born in Edo. His given name was Seishu. His nickname was Nenkyo. He was commonly known as Shuji. His pen name was also read as "Nyoden." His works include "Chronology of Western Studies" and "Illustrated Guide to Bugaku."

弘化(こうか)2年8月17日生まれ。大槻磐渓の次男。大槻文彦の兄。仙台藩藩校養賢堂にまなぶ。明治4年海軍兵学寮教官となり,文部省勤務ののち7年退官。以後在野の学者として和漢洋学,文芸,歌舞音曲など幅ひろく活躍した。昭和6年1月12日死去。87歳。江戸出身。名は清修。字(あざな)は念卿。通称は修二。号は「にょでん」ともよむ。著作に「洋学年表」「舞楽図説」など。
