A mountain range stretching from northeast to southwest in central Spain, northwest of Madrid, with a total length of about 200 km. Formed by the Cenozoic Alpine orogeny, it belongs to the Central Mountain Range along with the Toledo and Gredos Mountains, and divides the central plateau Meseta into north and south. The highest peak is Mount Peñalara (2,430 m). The area is very undulating, and the Guadarrama Pass connects Madrid with the cities of the former Castile region. There are ski resorts and other tourist and recreation facilities at the foot of the mountain, making it a resort in the capital.
