Osaka Silk and Cotton Exchange

...A commodity exchange located in Kitakyutaro-cho, Higashi-ku, Osaka City. It is often abbreviated to Sanshina, and is also called Sanshina Exchange. Osaka was already a distribution center for cotton-related products, from cotton produced in the suburbs to cotton thread and cotton cloth products, during the Edo period. However, with the development of the modern cotton spinning industry in the Meiji period, the city came to rely on imports for much of its raw cotton. As a result, there were more and more fluctuating factors, such as the harvest yield of imported cotton and trends in the export market for cotton products, and the movement to find a place to ensure safe and smooth transactions among related businesses gradually grew stronger.
