A marine fish of the Tetraodontiformes order, family Tetraodontiidae (illustration). It is found south of Aomori Prefecture, in Okinawa, and along the coasts of Southeast Asia. The back of the body is blackish-gray with numerous small light-colored circular spots scattered across it, which is where its name comes from. There is a black spot behind the pectoral fin and at the base of the dorsal fin. Total length 15cm. This is a highly poisonous pufferfish, and the liver, ovaries, skin, intestines, and testes are said to be highly or highly poisonous. [Hibiya Kyo]

フグ目フグ科の海産魚（イラスト）。青森県以南，沖縄，東南アジア沿岸にかけて分布。体の背面は黒灰色で，多数の淡色の小円斑を散らしている。これがその名の起りである。胸びれの後方と背びれ基底にはそれぞれ1個の黒い斑紋がある。全長15cm。毒性の強いフグで，肝臓，卵巣，次いで皮，腸，精巣などは猛毒ないし強毒をもつとされている。【日比谷京】
