Connecting rod

A rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft in steam engines and internal combustion engines. It transmits the reciprocating motion of the piston and obtains rotary motion through the crank. It is also called a connecting rod, or simply conrod. Since connecting rods are subjected to compressive loads, they must be thick enough to prevent buckling. They also need to be long enough to transmit motion smoothly, usually about 3 to 4 times the radius of the crank.

蒸気機関や内燃機関などでピストンとクランク軸とを結ぶ棒。ピストンの往復運動を伝え、クランクにより回転運動を得るためのもので、連桿(れんかん)、またはコネクティングロッドconnecting rod、略してコンロッドともいう。連接棒は圧縮荷重を受けるので、座屈(ざくつ)しないよう十分な太さが必要である。また運動を円滑に伝えるためには、十分な長さをもつ必要があり、普通、クランク半径の3～4倍程度の長さとする。
