An old town in Haibara County, southern Shizuoka Prefecture, on the southwest coast of Suruga Bay. In the Middle Ages it was the base of the Sagara clan, and in early modern times it was the castle of the Tanuma clan, with Sagara being the castle town. It developed as a key location for maritime traffic and the Sagara Highway. Occupying the southern part of Makinohara, it produces tea and mandarin oranges, and also raises livestock. It also operates a fishing industry. There is a beach, and the Sagara Makinohara Interchange on the Tomei Expressway is located here. 静岡県南部,駿河湾南西岸の榛原(はいばら)郡の旧町。中世は相良氏の拠点,近世は田沼氏が居城,主集落相良はその城下町。海上交通,相良街道の要地として発展。牧ノ原南部を占め,茶,ミカンを産し,畜産も行う。漁業も営む。海水浴場がある。東名高速道路相良牧之原インターチェンジがある。2005年10月,榛原郡榛原町と合併し市制,牧之原市となる。57.98km2。2万6545人(2003)。
