The main city of Chubut province in the Patagonia region of southern Argentina. Population 124,104 (1991). It was built in 1901 as a port for the Sarmiento settlement. In 2007, oil fields were discovered on nearby national land, and a railway was opened in 2009, and the town developed as a petroleum and natural gas town. A gas pipeline connecting it to the capital was completed in 1949. It has an oil refinery, and coke and petrochemical plants.
