…English surgeon. Born in Long Calderwood, Scotland, the youngest of ten children, he lost his father at the age of 13 and therefore did not receive a formal education. In 1748, he became an assistant to his older brother William H. (1718-1783), who was gaining fame as a surgeon in London, and studied anatomy and surgery. In 1753, he qualified as a Master of Anatomy.
