Although literature created in Arabic was not limited to Arabs, it spread to many regions from Iran to the Iberian Peninsula with the spread of Islam and the Arabic language, and its cultural traditions were also inherited. It is also called Arabic literature. Arabic literature appeared in history from the end of the 5th century. In the history of literature, the period is divided into the following: Jahiliya period (475-622), early Islamic period (622-750), Abbasid period (750-1258), Mongol, Mamluk, and Turkish rule period (1258-1798), and modern times (1798-).

アラビア語を用いて創造された文学をさすが，その担い手はアラブ人に限定されず，イスラムとアラビア語の拡大によってイランからイベリア半島まで多くの地域に広がり，その文化的伝統も継承された。アラビア文学とも呼ばれる。アラブ文学は5世紀末から歴史に現れた。文学史上ではジャーヒリーヤ時代(475‐622)，イスラム初期(622‐750)，アッバース朝時代(750‐1258)，モンゴル，マムルーク，トルコ支配時代(1258‐1798)，近現代(1798‐)という時代区分がなされている。
