Egyptian male deity. A combination of Osiris and Apis, he was a bull god. He was also considered the king of the underworld and the god of medicine. He was worshipped in Memphis, where he had a temple called the Serapeum. Ptolemy I promoted the cult of Serapis to mark the beginning of his dynasty, and established the center of his faith in the capital, Alexandria. There, Serapis was worshiped through Greek-style rituals, and he came to be worshiped by Macedonians and Greeks as well. He was identified with Dionysus as a fertility god and likened to a sun god, and spread throughout the Mediterranean world.
