Spanish author. After the outbreak of the civil war in 1936, he traveled to Buenos Aires, where he died. He had been promising as a literary talent since he was young, and he fully demonstrated his talent in many areas, publishing nearly 100 novels, essays, biographies, and other works throughout his life, but his greatest achievement was the creation of a unique form of expression called "greguería," a short sentence. His keen observation of nature, as seen in such lines as "The crickets that measure the pulse of the night," are reminiscent of those of Japanese haiku poets, but according to his own definition, it is the product of "a synthesis of humor and metaphor."

スペインの作家。1936年の内乱勃発により，ブエノス･アイレスへ渡り，その地で没した。若いときから嘱望されていた文学的才能は，生涯に100冊近く発表されることになる小説，随筆，伝記など多方面においていかんなく発揮されたが，最大の功績は〈グレゲリーアgreguería〉という特異な短文の表現形式の創造である。〈夜が打つ脈搏はかるコオロギや〉などに見られる鋭い自然観察眼は，日本の俳人のそれを思わせるが，彼自身の定義によれば〈諧謔（かいぎやく）と隠喩の総合〉の所産なのである。
