…Born in Dublin, he served on the side of the rebels in the Peninsular War in Spain, returning to the UK in 1814, after which he was involved in the manufacture of chemicals such as potassium cyanide. In 1823 he introduced the technology for manufacturing soda using the Leblanc process, built a soda factory in Liverpool, and in 1828, together with the Irishman Josaias C. Gamble, added a factory in St. Helens. From then on, he established factories in Newton, Widnes, Flint, and other places until he retired from the industry in 1857, laying the foundations for the alkali industry in Britain.
