In Greek mythology, she was a goddess of the sea, the daughter of Nereus and Oceanus (→Nereides). She was courted by Poseidon, the ruler of the sea, but she fled to the ends of the earth, but was carried to Poseidon on the back of a dolphin, who carried her back to him, where she became his wife and became queen of the sea.
