A seaport in the province of Lecce in Puglia, southern Italy. It is about 115 km southeast of Taranto and is the easternmost town in Italy. It faces the main east coast road and was built by the ancient Greeks as a port called Hydrus. It was the most important port in Rome after the trade port of Brudisium (Brindisi) with Greece. It is famous for its beautiful mosaic church built in the 12th century and remodeled at the end of the 15th century, and the Byzantine-era St. Peter's Basilica. It was destroyed by the army of Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire in 1480 and lost its status as a trading port. It became an important base during World War II. It is now a fishing port, beach, and agricultural distribution center. It became famous for H. Walpole's gothic novel The Castle of Otranto. Population: 5,152 (1991 estimate).
