1077‐1166 Founder of the Qadiriyya, the first mystical order (tariqa) in the Islamic world. Born in Gilan, Iran, he went to Baghdad and became a Hanbalite jurist. In his later years, he became popular among the citizens as a preacher, and a ribat (monastery) was built for him. In later years, he came to be regarded as one of the most famous saints in the Islamic world, and became the object of saintly worship.
