[Died] May 13, 1956. Soviet novelist, Moscow. Born into a family of teachers, he moved to the Far East as a boy and graduated from the Commercial High School in Vladivostok. After fighting in the civil war in the Far East and being injured, he began writing novels based on his own experiences, and made his debut in the literary world with Razliv (1923). After publishing his novel Annihilation in 1927, he became active as a leader of the proletarian literary movement and a member of the Writers' Union. He wrote works such as the unfinished novel Poslednii iz Udege (29-36) and the novel Molodaya gvardiya (45, revised 51), and committed suicide after criticizing Stalin.

ソ連の小説家。教師の家に生れ，少年時代に極東に移り，ウラジオストクの商業高等学校を卒業。極東での国内戦に参加，負傷したのち，自己の体験をもとに小説を書きはじめ，『氾濫』 Razliv (1923) で文壇に登場。 1927年長編『壊滅』を発表以後，プロレタリア文学運動の指導者，作家同盟の幹部として活躍。未完の長編『ウデゲ族の最後のもの』 Poslednii iz Udege (29～36) ，長編『若き親衛隊』 Molodaya gvardiya (45，改作 51) などの作品を書き，スターリン批判後，自殺した。
