…In 1868 (Meiji 1), Moka Prefecture was established to govern the former Tenryo (Shogunate territory), but the following year, Nikko Prefecture was established and annexed it. In 1870, Takatoku Domain, which had been transferred to Sogano in Shimousa, was annexed, followed by Kiryugawa Domain. In 1871, the feudal domains were abolished and replaced by prefectures, and the domains were each made into prefectures. In the same year, Nikko, Mibu, Fukiage, Sano, and Ashikaga Prefectures, along with Tatebayashi Prefecture (Kozuke) were merged into Tochigi Prefecture, and Utsunomiya, Karasuyama, Kuroba, Otawara, and Mogi Prefectures were merged into Utsunomiya Prefecture. In 1873, Tochigi Prefecture annexed Utsunomiya Prefecture, and in 1876, the former Tatebayashi Prefecture was transferred to Gunma Prefecture, and the prefectural boundaries were finalized. However, after World War II, some towns and villages were merged across the prefectural border with Gunma Prefecture. …
